COMPUTER-AIDED GENERAL PURPOSE DESIGN SYSTEM: SEABIRD
IHI has developed a unique integrated design and information system, SEABIRD (Ship-design Engineering Aided By Interactive Remote Display), which features very effective graphic processing. A Seabird consists of the following subsystems. 1) General purpose on-line data base management system. 2) Graphic processing utilities. 3) Business utilities. Seabird also features both the utility oriented system and the integrated design system, which are applicable, by the use of the above utility programs, not only to ship design engineering but also to general design engineering such as chemical design engineering, civil engineering and so on. Another feature of Seabird is the procedure management that manages the repetitive procedures applied to daily work. Seabird records the operational procedure automatically and stores it in the data base; thereafter, the user of Seabird can execute the desired procedure readily by one command. Effective management rationalization can be achieved mainly by promoting these procedures; Seabird has facilitated rationalization by making the best use of these features, resulting in a reduction of about 30% in design man-hours in the field of ship's hull and outfitting design engineering.
