QUERVERSCHUB OF THE 2,000 FT OBERKASSEL BRIDGE

The cable stayed bridge in the Federal Republic of Germany was built 47.5m upstream from its final designated position. This constructed position was necessary since traffic requirements dictated the use of the obsolete bridge while the new bridge was under construction. The new bridge was pulled downstream to the alignment of the old structure. Keeping the old alignment was necessary to minimize the environmental impact on the two cities. The new cable-stayed steel box girder bridge was slid on teflon bearing pads on a polished stainless steel track.
