MULTIDIMENSIONAL ANALYSES OF JUDGMENTS ABOUT TRAFFIC NOISE

Experiments were made to determine the aspects of traffic noise that are most important to human observers. Subjects were presented pairs of 1-min traffic sounds and asked to choose the one they would rather be exposed to on a regular basis. Aversiveness to sounds was related mainly to their subjective intensity. The importance is shown of a quantity called the energy-equivalent sound level.
