ANALYSIS OF PLANT GROWTH IN FLY ASH AMENDED SOILS

The paper reports on a study whose overall objectives were to determine the minimum treatments necessary to successfully ameliorate different types of strip mining spoils from the west central Alabama region, and to provide evidence that realistic and economic methods for successful restoration of spoils was possible. The primary purpose of the experiments to date has been to provide a quantitative analysis of growth for various plant species growing on raw and fly ash ameliorated strip mine spoils. The parameters used in greenhouse and field studies include plant height, dry weight, root-shoot ratios; and specifically for legumes: nodulation, pod production and nitrogen fixing capacity.
