IMPROVED SAFETY AT LESS COST

The article describes the installation of the first length of double-sided concrete safety barrier in Britain. The barrier, formed by precast concrete units, has been installed on the A2 in Southwark, South East London, and replaces a steel barrier. The profile of the concrete barrier is designed to deflect vehicles from either side. Impact energy is absorbed by compression of a vehicle's suspension rather than by the crushing of bodywork and deflection of the barrier. At this particular site 90 precast units were used to make up the 91 M barrier each unit weighing 0.9 tonne. /TRRL/
