The requirements for colour and intensity of light signals for controlling traffic are discussed. Colour (red, green and amber) must cater for drivers with abnormal colour vision. Research has indicated an intensity of 200 cd for a red signal viewed against the sky, increasing to 600 cd under high-speed situations. Blackboards behind signals improve viewing where there is a bright sky. (A). /TRRL/
