THE ASSESSMENT OF PAVEMENT SERVICEABILITY
The author discusses the concept of pavement serviceability giving examples and illustrations of the methods used to measure serviceability. Measures of pavement deformation are often used as criteria of structural strength. It is claimed that measurements of surface curvature under load give a better indication of pavement structural condition than measurements of transient deflection which relate primarily with the condition in the subgrade. Examples are given to show how deflection and curvature measurements may be combined to define an overlay design procedure. The author discusses the effectiveness of methods used to measure other factors affecting pavement serviceability. Riding quality is important to the road user but does not receive enough attention because it cannot be related directly to structural strength. The pavement serviceability index developed at the AASHO road test is explained, and methods used to modify it for use as A standard for the acceptance of new pavements in other countries are examined. Skid resistance measurements are now being related to the "risk rating" of the site. /TRRL/
