AN ASSESSMENT OF BRITISH PENDULUM BASED METHODS OF SKID RESISTANCE EVALUATION USING SCHONFELD'S PHOTO-INTERPRETATION METHOD
This paper compares British pendulum based and other conventional methods of skid resistance evaluation with Schonfeld's photogrammetric procedure. At the present time no one standard method of skid resistance evaluation exists. Virtually all the methods available are totally empirical and give no direct indication which of the many factors relating to the road surface are contributing to the skid resistance value recorded. The most commonly used British method, the portable skid resistance tester (known as the British pendulum), falls into this category. Even when this test is performed in conjunction with the sand patch method of texture depth measurement, little further may be learnt. Field and laboratory work has been carried out on a variety of road surfaces. The results of this work demonstrate the unreliability of the British pendulum on surfaces of irregular profile. Methods of high speed skid resistance based upon the British pendulum are shown to be similarly affected. The work demonstrates that Schonfeld's photogrammetric method has many practical and philosophical advantages over other methods of skid resistance evaluation. /TRRL/
