SULPHUR-ASPHALT ROAD TRIALS CARRIED OUT IN EUROPE
Following the successful demonstration in Texas of the sulphur-asphalt process, road trials have been carried out in Spain, Finland and France. The details of these trials are briefly outlines. In Spain, 1.3 km of a road was resurfaced over a 8 meter width with sulphur-asphalt. Two layers of hot mix were applied over a period of two weeks. Each layer consumed about 1,300 tons of hot mix the 5.5-5.7 percent sulphur-asphalt binder. In Helsinki, Sweden, sulphur-asphalt was used in resurfacing a one-kilometer stretch of road 9 m wide. A total of 1,200 tons of hot mix containing 6.7 percent of sulphur-asphalt binder was applied in a layer 6 cm thick. The French trial, the largest so far, involved 8 km on a highway carrying heavy traffic.
