NEVADA'S OWN "WEST SIDE STORY" ENDS WELL AFTER RIOTOUS START

The article describes how citizen participation and community involvement provided a solution to some critical problems that faced the Nevada Highway Department. Objections were rasied by the minority resdents to a proposed freeway construction. The residents wanted major changes and greater involvement in their community and transportation planning. The need was indicated for alterations in the freeway, for improved recreational facilities, and for more consideration in the planning phase of any public works project affecting the community. A mayor's special committee studied local desires and needs relating to landscaping and mini-parks. The rpeort that was prepared contained recommendations related to: freeway penetrations through use of grade separations; design to incorporate a wide-open appearance; miniparks; and urban renewal. Comments are made on community involvement in the minipark study.
