DYNAMIC BEHAVIOUR OF CONTAINERS IN A HOLD DURING VOYAGES
An account is given of an experimental and theoretical investigation of the behaviour of containers stowed in the hold of a cellular container-ship in a seaway. In rolling tests, carried out with container models stacked on an apparatus with a rolling bed, it was found that the loads acting on a guide rail of the cell structure and on the inner-bottom plating depend on the lateral distance of the container column from the centerline, as well as on the amplitude and frequency of the ship's rolling. Dynamic behaviour of the containers is affected primarily by the clearance between the containers and the guide rails. These experimental results agree well with calculations based on the matrix method.
