SOVIET MERCHANT MARINE AND WORLD SHIPPING

The prime objective of the Soviet merchant marine in international shipping is to meet the demands of the USSR's rapidly growing foreign trade. The author describes the expansion of the fleet during the past five years and the projected expansion by 1980. He provides a review of the present and prospective status of the merchant marine and summarises the types of ship that are being added. He concludes with a discussion of the relationship of the expanding Soviet fleet with established shipping lines, refuting claims of unfair competition.
