STUDY ON EMISSION CONTROL OF USED CARS. (PART 2) CHARACTERISTICS AND EFFECTS OF IGNITION RETARDERS ON THE EMISSION CONTROL OF GASOLINE ENGINES

As a part of measures to control vehicle emissions, ignition retarders, approved by government, have been installed in used cars since 1973 in Japan. Though the retarding of ignition timing is effective in reducing emissions, it also affects engine performance and power, for which reason approval tests were carried out prior to legislation. This paper reports the results of these tests under the following headings; (1) fundamental behaviour of the devices and distributors, especially regarding response to initial carburettor throttle valve opening; (2) degrees of retarded timing under transient and steady driving conditions; (3) effects on combustion and engine power; (4) effects on emissions under 4-mode, 10-mode and other modes representing urban traffic patterns; and (5) required engine maintenance and tuning (idling speed, distributor setting, inlet and exhaust valve clearances, spark plug gaps) to retain the effectiveness of the retarders. /TRRL/
