THE "COLLOMETRE" - DEVICE FOR DETECTING DEFECTS IN THE VICINITY OF THE ASPHALTIC CONCRETE-STABILIZED ROADBASE INTERFACE

LE COLLOMETRE--DISPOSITIF DE DETECTION DES DEFAUTS AU VOISINAGE DE L'INTERFACE BETON BITUMINEUX--ASSISE TRAITEE.

Details are given of an experimental apparatus which is based on the following principle: when a shock is emitted at the surface of structure, the shock wave goes through the surface layer and reaches the interface with the roadbase. If the structure is sound, only a small amount of energy is reflected; if there exists a defect in the structure, most of the energy is reflected. The device comprises a mobile mass for emission of the shock and a measuring chain consisting of a geophonic sensor and an electronic voltmeter. Details are given of the test procedures and of the results obtained during a series of tests carried out on the A6 motorway and the RN20 highway. The results are compared with those obtained on sample cores. The few tests conducted show that the technique gives excellent results when bonding defects between of surfacing and stabilized roadbase are to be detected. /TRRL/
