THEORY STUDY OF THE BEHAVIOUR OF PILES SUBJECTED TO VERTICAL LOAD; INTRODUCTION OF DILATANCY
ETUDE THEORIQUE DU COMPORTEMENT DES PIEUX SOUS CHARGE VERTICALE; INTRODUCTION DE LA DILATANCE.
A bibliographic summary of research on the dilatancy behaviour of non-cohesive soil is presented. A special study is conducted of the influence of dilatancy on shear strength and on strain/stress characteristics. The second part of the report describes an investigation on lateral friction carried out on a simplified model of a cross section of soil, assuming the deformation to be plane. The notion of dilatancy is introduced in the form of a variation in volume by means of experimental results obtained in simple shear tests and cylindrical expansion tests. The general problem of deep foundations in elastic and swelling media is dealt with by means of the finite element method which enables the hypothesis of plane deformation to be verified together with the merits of the study of the soil cross-section. Lateral friction can be considered, on the main part of the shaft, as a local phenomenon which is A function of the depth of embedment and of the characteristics of the soil at that level. Its radial distribution in the vicinity of the shaft is in 1/R. /TRRL/
