PREPARATION OF BITUMINOUS BINDERS FROM RECYCLED PVC

PREPARATION DE LIANTS HYDROCARBONES A PARTIR DE PCV DE RECUPERATION.

Details are given of preliminary tests carried out to study the possibility of reusing pvc bottles in road binders. The bottles are directly incorporated in the binder during a first series of tests, the pvc was added to tar and coal oil only with a view to producing waterproofing binders, resistant to kerosene, for surface dressings, etc. The physico-mechanical properties of the mixtures were investigated by subjecting the latter to longitudinal tensile stresses at various temperatures and rates. It appears that mixtures with an excessive content of solid pitch and/or pvc are rigid and become quickly brittle without the addition of pvc specific plasticizers and oil products. For some applications, it is envisaged to keep only the oily part of the coal tar. Before making use of this type of binder, it is advisable to carryout a cost-benefit analysis and to ensure the necessary supply of bottles and coal products. /TRRL/
