CWMCARN SCENIC FOREST DRIVE STUDY

This report defines a scenic drive as a road designed or converted primarily for pleasure travel with associated recreation facilities. In 1972, the experimental scenic forest drive at Cwmcarn was opened for a two-year period to demonstrate and test the techniques involved. Details are given of the planning of the drive, car parking capacity and other facilities, equipment installed, surfacing, charging, publicity, management, and construction and research work. The experiment was monitored by means of questionnaire surveys showing records of parking, visitor activity, and cars arriving and departing. The survey results are given and used to assess the experiment. The costs of the whole operation are quoted. /TRRL/
