UNLOADING PROCEDURES FOR TANKERS (VLCC'S) AT THE WILHELMSHAVEN DEEPWATER HARBOR

ABFERTIGUNG VON TANKERN (VLCC'S) IM TIEFWASSERHEFEN EILHELMSCHAVEN

Nord-West Oelleitung GmbH, a company formed in 1956, began its operations in 1958 for the purpose of ensuring oil supply to six refineries in the Rhine-Ruhr area via pipeline. Consequently, it built an oil terminal at Wilhelmshaven and an oil pipeline from that harbor to Cologne. A new pier for handling tankers up to 250,000 dwt was added in 1971. This article reviews the unloading procedures for tankers--very large crude carriers (VLCC'S)--at the Wilhelmshaven deepwater harbor. These procedures include entering the Jade waterway, berthing at the NWO pier, unloading, ballasting, cargo accounting, as well as leaving the berth.
