SOCK -- AN OIL SKIMMING KIT FOR VESSELS OF CONVENIENCE
An oil spill sweep skimmer kit is under development for emergency use in the Gulf of Alaska. The Spilled Oil Containment Kit (SOCK) is containerized oil containment and removal equipment to be deployed on either side of a vessel of convenience, making the vessel an emergency sweep skimmer. Frame-supported nylon/nitrile rubber socks are tied alongside the vessel to provide a sweep width of 50 ft plus the vessel beam. Pumps and storage are also included. Based on model tests, the skimmer performance is expected to approach that of state-of-the-art skimmers.
