STATISTICAL LIMITATIONS OF DOMESTIC AND INTERNATIONAL TRANSPORTATION OF UNITED STATES FOREIGN TRADE: 1970 (PUBLIC USE TAPES) WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO THE UNITED STATES GREAT LAKES REGION

The research results reported in this paper are based on an analysis of a subset of the data contained on the Domestic and International Transportation of U.S. Foreign Trade: 1970 (Public Use Tapes) released by the Department of Commerce, Bureau of the Census in 1972. A comprehensive review of the survey's sampling process reveals the limited usefulness of the data; the weighting scheme employed permitted very accurate estimates of critical characteristics of the population but resulted in intolerable sample variability when concerned with other characteristics for selected sub-populations. This finding restricted efforts to a descriptive rather than an analytical reevaluation of the geographic region served by the Great Lakes in international shipping of general cargo.
