THE RESPONSE OF REINFORCED CONCRETE BRIDGE PIERS TO SEISMIC MOTIONS

The advent of advanced computing techniques in recent years has enabled complex inelastic analyses of structures to be undertaken. These analyses produce more realistic interpretations of actual structural behaviour. They can be particularly useful in evaluating the response of reinforced concrete bridge structures during earthquakes and in determining the ductility requirements of structures designed to withstand such seismic disturbances. However, the complex nature of inelastic analyses, and the large number of parameters involved, can often lead to surprising and unpredictable results. In order to investigate the effects of the different parameters a considerable number of analyses were undertaken using the "two dimensional frame analysis" programme with ranges of values for the various parameters. /TRRL/
