GEOTECHNICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF MORAINE CLAYS RELATED TO THEIR STRUCTURE

The geotechnical parameters of strength and elasticity have been investigated in the laboratory and in the field. Tests were made on three different moraine clays in southern Sweden. The relationship between moisture content, fissures, fissure systems, content of coarse grains and the geotechnical parameters was studied. It is shown that the parameters are volume dependent at low moisture content. The failure mechanism is found to be quite different at low and at high moisture contents. A theory is presented to explain why the absolute values of strength and elasticity decrease with increasing moisture content. /TRRL/
