COMMENTS ON THE THEME OF WINDSCREENS IN MOTOR CARS

STELLUNGNAHME ZUM THEMENKOMPLEX WINDSCHUTZSCHEIBEN VON PERSONNENKRAFTWAGEN

The comments comprise the statements, contents and experiences of a discussion of experts (eye-surgeons, legal-medical practitioners, accident surgeons, motor engineers), individual conversations with glass and vehicle manufacturers and a synopsis of available literature on scientific background and past experience. There follows a detailed description of the glass types ESG and VSG and a comparison of the accident-relative qualities and the codes of practice for development. The present state of legislation relative to the requirements and testing of safety-glass, ESG and VSG and recommendations for legal requirements are given. Finally the general economic situation (manufacturers and consumers) is discussed. Examination of the technical- and accident-relative qualities of both types of glass shows that the VSG screens have predominant advantages relating to injury and accident damage over the ESG screens; these advantages are, however, not so decisive when seen against the background of an increasing use of seat belts, that the fitting of ESG screens should be forbidden. This consideration is reinforced by the results of a cost benefit study, which shows that from a total economic viewpoint the general replacement of ESG screens by the dearer VSG screens even in favourable circumstances would result in costs being greater than benefits. /TRRL/
