ITS BLOOMS IN THE DESERT: ARIZONA'S MDI PROGRAM

At the end of 1996, the US Department of Transportation (DOT) selected Phoenix, AZ, as one of four model cities in the USA to implement an intelligent transportation infrastructure (ITI). AZTech was set up as a new partnership of public agencies and private companies to manage the $35M model deployment project in the Phoenix metropolitan area. It is using advanced communication technology to integrate the area's transport system, and improve travel conditions and air quality. It is linking traffic operation centres, to share information, coordinate traffic signals, and control congestion. Sensors will monitor traffic conditions on nearly 200 miles of motorways and streets, to identify locations of congestion and accidents. The motorway management system has closed circuit television (CCTV), variable message signs (VMS), loop detectors, and ramp meters. When an accident closes part of a motorway or street, the traffic centres alert response teams, relieve traffic congestion, and immediately notify drivers of alternative routes. AZTech is installing an automatic vehicle location (AVL) system to track over 85 buses as they travel along their routes. It is developing a regional traveller information system, to provide up-to-date information on accidents, delays, bus routes, and timetables.
