INFLUENCE OF HAMMER TYPE ON SPT RESULTS. DISCUSSION AND CLOSURE

A discussion of a paper with the aforementioned title by E.E. Drumright, C.W. Pfingsten, and R.G. Lukas, published in this journal (Volume 122, Number 7, July 1996), is presented. The discussers are strong proponents of the CME automatic hammer system, since it essentially eliminates the operator and a number of other potential sources of significant error in standard penetration testing (SPT), and recommend that other types of hammers and other hammer drop systems be retired in lieu of this automatic system. The discussers also caution against using SPT for geotechnical sampling in fine-grained soils, especially soft and very soft clays. Discussion is followed by closure from the authors.
