CHINA'S URBAN TRANSPORT DEVELOPMENT STRATEGY: PROCEEDINGS OF A SYMPOSIUM IN BEIJING, NOVEMBER 8-10, 1995. THEME PAPER 6: INVESTMENT IN MASS RAPID TRANSIT

This paper considers how mass rapid transit might improve the environment of Chinese cities. The current transport situation in Chinese cities and plans to construct metro systems are described. A comprehensive review of metro systems built in 21 developing cities is then presented based on a study by the UK Overseas Development Administration. Issues considered include the reasons for choosing a metro, the planning and implementation process, financing, operating costs and impacts of the metro. Policy guidelines for future metro development in China are suggested. The final section highlights the need for the development of bus transit and provides guidelines for the development of a bus transit strategy. For the covering abstract see IRRD 890936.
