A PROGRAM FOR IMPROVEMENT OF BITUMINOUS SURFACE TREATMENTS ON SOUTH CAROLINA SECONDARY HIGHWAYS

This project is concerned with the improvement in the design and construction specifications of surface treatments for secondary roads in South Carolina. Field trial sections were selected from projects scheduled for construction during the 1974 season and represented the Piedmont, Sand Hills, and Coastal Plain areas of the state. A set of designs were selected to permit an evaluation of the designs as well as several variations in materials and construction procedure. Several standard DHPT designs as well as a special design were utilized in the test sections. The construction variables were selected to determine the effect of prime, the effect in change of asphalt emulsions from RS-2 to CRS-2, the effect of rubber additive (Pliopave), and the effect of modified construction procedure to determine if placing the mat stone before the application of asphalt affects performance.
