USE OF NON-CIRCULAR LOADING PLATES FOR BETTER BACKCALCULATION OF PAVEMENT MODULI

This paper examines theoretically the feasibility of using non-circular loading plates in order to increase the accuracy of the Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD) testing method for asphalt pavements. In this paper, an elliptic shape of FWD loading plate is considered. This elliptic loading plate has exactly the same area as that of a conventional circular loading plate. The pressure induced by the elliptic loading plate is assumed to be uniformly distributed over the contact area at the pavement surface. Based on the elastostatic theory of a multi-layer system, the paper focused on the analysis of surface deflection bowls induced by the FWD loading associated with the elliptic plate. Numerical results are presented to illustrate the extent to which the non-circular loading plate influences the pavement surface deflection bowls. The results demonstrate the importance of using non-ciurcular loading plates in a better estimation of pavement material properties via FWD and its associated backcalculation procedures.
