ASPHALT AS A VARIABLE--BIG TIMBER TEST SECTIONS (WITH DISCUSSION)

Test pavements with asphalt as the variable were constructed in Montana to determine if the roadway performance was predictable from high performance gel permeation chromatography (HP-GPC). The contract for these sections became known as the Big Timber-Springdale Experimental Test. The properties that were monitored were cracking and rut depth. Differences in rut depth of essentially identical sections helped identify a recognizable difference of asphalt behavior. The asphalt transverse cracking also indicated strongly that performance was related to the asphalt characteristics.
