VARIANT BOWSTRING ARCH BRIDGE
The suspenders are vertical in ordinary tied arch bridges with symmetric optimal arch axis. If the suspenders are inclined, the optimal arch axis will be asymmetric. Based on the theoretical analysis and design, a new type of bridge with variant tied arches is developed and presented in this paper. The variant tied arch bridges have inclined suspenders and asymmetric arch axes which are easy to construct and aesthetic in appearance. Four real construction examples are presented and the results show that the variant tied arch bridges are adaptable to wide range of application with good economic benefit.
