SYSTEMS FOR PROVIDING INFORMATION TO PEDESTRIANS AND THE VISUALLY IMPAIRED
For pedestrians and the visually impaired to be able to move about in safety and comfort, it is important to use the existing roadway stock efficiently, as well as the construction of wide walkways and high-quality road infrastructure. It is also necessary to create an environment which is easy to use and understand through the provision of appropriate information. Up to now, special signs have been used to provide information to pedestrians and others. However, with the development of information and communication technologies in recent years, plans are being considered for installing intensive information terminals on roadways, providing information for portable equipment, and providing travelers with possible routes to their destinations. This paper will consider three methods for providing information to pedestrians and others: a) pedestrian information signs, b) information terminals, and c) portable equipment (terminals). Furthermore, taking the characteristics of each method into consideration, such as signboard level, ability to output (print) materials, and changeability of display, the means for transmitting information for each of these methods, including information collecting and updating, transmission and communication, and information display, will be conceptualized.
