TRANSPORTATION NETWORK ANALYSIS

This book presents a coherent approach to the analysis of transportation networks based on the concept of network equilibrium and the application of convex programming methods. Chapter 1 provides an introduction. Chapter 2 introduces transportation networks and the terminology used in the book. Chapter 3 introduces the mathematical notation, optimality conditions and some basic convex programming methods. Chapter 4 looks at the relationship between link flows and link costs. Chapter 5 presents deterministic user equilibrium assignment methods, while Chapter 6 presents stochastic user equilibrium assignment methods. Attention is given to the derivation of sensitivity measures in both cases. Chapter 7 looks at the estimation of trip tables, pointing to the advantages of path flow estimation under stochastic user equilibrium assignment. Chapter 8 looks at network reliability and Chapter 9 at network design. The concluding chapter seeks to highlight the strengths and weaknesses of the methods discussed, and indicates promising areas for further research. An index is provided.
