LOW CYCLE FATIGUE OF INTERSECTIONS OF BOTTOM LONGITUDINALS MADE OF ST. 52

Low cycle fatigue tests with full-scale structural specimens have been carried out in the Ship Structures Laboratory at Delft on a 600 ton tension-compression machine. The specimens represented the interconnection of longitudinal frames and transverse bulkheads constructed in a higher strength steel. Six specimens were of the interrupted type; four ones had a continuous bulbframe. A comparison is made with similar bottom longitudinals made of mild steel. Axial cyclic loading was applied ( Pmin/Pmax = - 1/2 ). The results are given for different crack areas as a function of nominal, local and peak stresses.
