BUS LANES AND BUSWAY SYSTEMS
The report includes a discussion of local bus lanes accompanied by a representative inventory of bus lanes and accompanying measures in OECD Member countries. Bus route systems involving arterial or motorway traffic corridors and additional facilities for improving bus service and areawide bus systems which can include a network of continuous grade-separated routes for buses serving all parts of an urban area are also examined. Quantitative and qualitative criteria which must be considered before installing bus lanes are examined. Emphasis is given to the need for a systematic evaluation of the impact of bus priority measures upon the various interested parties, stressing the desirability of developing a specific standard methodology for this evaluation. Finally, the report puts forward general principles for drawing up a balanced policy as regards the different priority treatments. It also gives recommendations for improving the means and techniques of analysis and evaluation which form the basis of such a policy. /Author/
