STUDY OF THE EFFECT OF USAGE ON SEAT BELT STRENGTH

The Snowy Mountains Engineering Corporation was commissioned by the Australian Department of Transport to carry out a testing program on used seat belts, including belts worn in frontal accidents. The objective of the program was to assess the effect of usage on the performance of the seat belt assembly. From this, it was hoped to obtain sufficient data to establish criteria for scrapping seat belts. This information would be of benefit to the motorist in helping him to assess whether the seat belts fitted to his vehicle would give him the protection intended. /Author/TRRL/
