LONG VEHICLE AND VEHICLE COMBINATIONS. THE REPORT OF THE TRAFFIC SAFETY COMMISSION

LAANGA FORDON OCH FORDONSKOMBINATIONER. BETAENKANDE AVGIVET AV TRAFIKSAEKERHETSUTREDNINGEN

Various aspects of a reduction in permitted lorry combination length from 24 M to 18 M were investigated. Studies of conditions abroad and overtaking tests were carried out. The main findings are: (1) accident risk due to a certain vehicle combination decreases when length of that combination is cut; (2) if volume of goods remains unchanged, a reduction in length causes an increase in traffic; (3) accident risk due to articulated vehicles is considerably higher than that due to lorry and trailer combinations of the same length; (4) an increase in number of articulated vehicles is very probable if permitted length is cut; (5) irrespective of a cut in length, steps should be taken to improve traffic safety of articulated vehicles; (6) in addition, if reduction in length is to improve traffic safety, a large proportion of goods transport must be moved from road traffic to other mades; (7) a reduction cannot be expected to result in injuries being less serious; (8) vehicles and vehicle combinations longer than 18 M should carry a sign with a symbol for a lorry and trailer; (0) there is no evidence that reduction from 24 M to 18 M will alone reslt in improved traffic safety. Unless the above steps are taken, a reduction may cause traffic safety to deteriorate.
