COMMUTER CARPOOL PARKING FACILITY

This package covers the results of a pilot facility for commuter carpool parking built by the UDOT at American Fork, Utah. The procedure used to select, design, construct, operate and maintain the lot are discussed in this package. A total of 50 sites were evaluated through aerial and postcard surveys to determine where the pilot facility should be constructed. The area selected was the location most widely used by commuters to form carpools. Also land was easily available. The site was designed for 119 parked cars and included a bituminous surface, curbing, fencing, lighting, telephone and litter containers. The lot is maintained by UDOT maintenance crews and is patroled by the local police and Utah Highway Patrol to prevent vandalism. The lot has eliminated cars parking on shoulders & prompted an increase of approximately 100% in commuter related parking. /Author/
