In this paper, some recently developed methods of analysing the sway buckling of welded frame structures are reviewed, and the need is demonstrated for an approximate hand method which can be used for frames of unusual geometry or loading. The first stage of such a method is then developed, which is based on the effective length charts currently used by Australian designers. The method is an extension of A previous method used for analysing the buckling of braced welded frames, and a recently developed modification for the lateral buckling of continuous beams. The application of the method is demonstrated for a series of example frames. (A) /TRRL/
