The general problem of soft subgrades and increased traffic loadings is considered. For clayey soils, it is shown how these problems can often be economically met by upgrading with lime stabilization an in situ soil to suitable sub-base standards. Alternative treatments (and the role of drainage) for silty and fine sandy soils are also outlined, with particular reference to several entirely new procedures which appear to have some future promise. /TRRL/
