METHODS FOR DETECTING ROAD SECTIONS WITH HIGH FREQUENCY OF ICE FORMATION

The aim of this investigation was to work out appropriate methods for detecting sections with high frequency of ice formation. The first part was carried out as a conventional local climatological study of air temperature and air humidity close to the road surface. Measuring trips by car and stationary instruments were used for data collection. The roads investigated have a length of 180 kilometers. To make a visual combination of results possible, a simple local climatological map has been constructed. The frequency of slipperiness on roads has been marked on the maps in three classes and for each marking the micrometeorological situation for ice formation is stated. The second part was concentrated on surveying road surface temperatures by means of airborne infrared thermography. The thermal scanner was equipped with a detector for the 8-13 micrometre region. In the thermal pictures differences in road surface temperature are clearly visible. Infrared thermography has chiefly given information on cold road sections on bridges and in small valleys during nights with clear, calm weather. The measurements carried out during the last winter season have shown that road cuts in bed-rock can give either marked cold spots on road surfaces or, when exposed to sun, even relatively warm road surfaces. /TRRL/
