OBSERVATIONAL STUDIES OF CHILDREN'S ROAD CROSSING BEHAVIOUR: A REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE

A review is presented of 14 studies of children's road crossing behaviour. The object of this report is twofold: (1) to present a data base on what is known about children's road crossing behaviour; and (2) to outline the methodological possibilities and difficulties when carrying out observational studies of this kind. For the separate road sections, footpath, kerb and carriageway the influence on pedestrian behaviour of personal, social, traffic and roadway variables is described. The behavioural features dealt with are: the route taken, stopping, walking tempo, delay, head movements, safety margins, gap acceptance and social activities. The aim of the author is to make a first step towards a child traffic ethogram, a systematic description of behaviour, exposure and accidents in traffic, interpreted in terms of psychological and traffic conflict theories. /TRRL/
