STUDY OF A HYDROGEN-POWERED ENGINE AND MEASURES FOR IMPROVEMENT

UNTERSUCHUNGEN AN EINEM WASSERSTOFFMOTOR UND MASSNAHMEN ZUR PROZESSVERBESSERUNG

The paper reports on investigations on a hydrogen-fueled single-cylinder si-engine and on possibilities of overcoming backfire, preignition and combustion knock. An analysis of the pressure diagram of the hydrogen engine shows lower peak pressures, nearly the same pressure rise and essentially lower variations of the peak pressure compared with the gasoline fueled engine operated at the same equivalence ratio. Mainly as a result of the lower heating value of the mixture the hydrogen engine has lower engine power compared with the gasoline fueled engine. This disadvantage must be compensated by an enlarged swept volumen. Due to the extended inflammability limits of the hydrogen-air-mixture it is possible to control the power output of the hydrogen engine by varying the air-fuel ratio. By this control essentially improved efficiency at part load can be achieved. Further improvements in efficiency at low part load are possible by additional throttling at constant air-fuel ratio. A high incentive for the application of hydrogen results from the carbonless exhaust emission. Moreover the hydrogen engine controlled by the air-fuel ratio emits essentially less oxides of nitrogen in part load than the gasoline fueled engine. With regard to these results, it can be summarized that the application of hydrogen as alternative fuel for the future automotive engines seems promising. /Author/TRRL/
