BLAST FURNACE SLAG FOR USE IN ROAD BUILDING. A LITERATURE STUDY
MASUGNSSLAGG SOM VAEGMATERIAL. EN LITTERATURSTUDIE
This report is a literature study of the properties of blast furnace slag as a road material. In Sweden the material has been used to a very small extent, but diminishing gravel resources and respect for nature conservation have brought its suitability as a road material into notice. It is found that air-cooled blast furnace slag is well suited for road base and subbase purposes and pavements with very good bearing properties can be obtained. Its usefulness as a surfacing aggregate in Sweden is more doubtful, mainly because of low resistance to abrasion by studded tyres. Watercooled blast furnace slag (granulated or pelletized slag) can be used as a stabilizing agent when activated by lime if the percentage of fines is high enough. This field of application deserves special attention. /TRRL/
