DESTRUCTION OF CONCRETE STRUCTURES DUE TO THE AGGRESSIVE ACTION OF SULPHATES CONTAINED IN WATER AND SOIL

DESTRUCCION DE LAS ESTRUCTURAS DE HORMIGON POR LA ACCION AGRESIVA DE LOS SOLFATOS CONTENIDOS EN AGUAS Y SUELOS EN CONTRACTO CON LAS ESTRUCTURAS

Data are given for evaluating the aggressive action of sulphates on structures and on preventive measures to be taken if early failure is to be avoided. This report is divided as follows: 1) porous and capillary structure of hardened concrete. Its relation with the absorption and permeability of the material. 2) movement of a liquid in hardened concrete. Its relation with concrete durability; 3) destruction of concrete structures through the aggressive action of sulphates. Water and moisture as necessary factors for the aggressive action to occur. Necessity of studying soil and climatic conditions of the place where the structures are located; 4) mechanism of aggressive action; 5) forseeable degree of attack as a function of the sulphate concentration in contact soil and water; 6) sulphate-resistant cement (portland cement, pozzolanic cement); 7) forecast of cement behaviour in the presence of sulphate; 8) sulphate-resistant concrete; 9) recommendations concerning the stage prior to construction; 10) recommendations concerning the characteristics necessary for high resistance to sulphate aggression; 11) control of various types of cement on the construction site; 12) concrete quality control on the construction site; 13) recommendations for sampling water and soil coming in contact with structures. Their analysis and forecast of their aggressive properties. /TRRL/
