AUTO ECONOMY: A FEDERAL TASK FORCE VIEW
A recent interagency study indicates that weight reduction, technologically-available powerplants, and more efficient transmissions have the potential for improving fuel economy some 80-100% over 1975 levels. In modeling a national fleet to the year 2000, the group identified several strategies of phase-in, fleet mix, emission control, and performance that could be compatible with national goals of energy conservation.
