THE USE OF RECLAIMED AGGREGATE MATERIALS IN ROAD CONSTRUCTION

A research project on the use of reclaimed materials in road construction and maintenance is being carried out on behalf of the Department of the Environment (DoE). The broad aim of the project is to make recommendations to Government aimed at increasing the contribution of reclaimed materials to the overall requirement for aggregates. The project is being carried out in three phases. Phase 1 comprised a survey of current and recent use of reclaimed aggregate materials in road construction and maintenance. Phase 2 involved the identification and preliminary assessment of factors enabling and constraining the use of these materials. Phase 3 comprised a critical appraisal of the enabling and constraining factors which lead to the identification of options for the development of future Government policy. The final results of this project will be presented to the Department in November 1996 and then to the public in a seminar in the Spring of 1997. This paper presents a draft of the results and conclusions of the work by the authors. (A) For the covering abstract see IRRD 493138.
