A SEMI-MEMBRANE TANK SYSTEM FOR GAS SHIPS

The liquefied gas transported by Bridgestone Liquefied Gas Co, Ltd is done aboard ships utilizing a semi-membrane tank system. This system employs a flexible inner bag which actually holds the liquid gas and is supported by an outer membrane which provides insulation and contains any leaks. The system was devised by noting problems of stress and support in three small ships with this system or similar systems in use. Full sized ships have now been constructed with flexible inner cargo bags and outer semi-membranes. The advantages of these ships are noted and explained. Stresses have been observed and measured in the smaller ships. Welding is performed on both sides of the tank during construction and inspection is done by X-Ray.
