DISPOSAL OF WASTE OIL IN ENGINE ROOM

In 1974, a sub-committee of the Marine Engineering Society in Japan completed an investigation and survey of systems for the collection and disposal of waste oil (excluding oil that can be "regenerated") from the various engine-room sources. Information on the different systems used included design data obtained by questionnaire from member companies of the M.E.S.J., and should form a convenient and useful reference for designers. The Author, of Misubishi H.I., summarizes and briefly discusses some of the data thus obtained. A diagram is included outlining the progress of the waste oil or oily water between the various sources and the point of disposal (the incinerator, apart from outboard disposal from the bilge separator) in one system of disposal; no conclusion has yet been reached on the different systems in use. A table shows the properties of waste oils and the quantities accumulated in the various collecting tanks from the different sources in four makes of main Diesel engine and from other sources including several types of oil purifier.
