The current mining rate (ore and waste) at South Africa's Palabora open-pit copper mine is approaching 300,000 tonne/day. This article describes how initial inefficient utilization of the large haul fleet -- due largely to trucks having to wait in line at shovels -- was substantially improved by the development and installation of a computerized truck control system. Several benefits arising from the use of the computerized truck dispatching system are discussed including useful planning and production accounting.
