NOISE PROTECTION ALONG URBAN MAIN ROADS
LA PROTEZIONE ACUSTICA LUNGO LE GRANDE STRADE URBANE
This article deals with traffic noise in urban areas where noise levels vary between 75-85 db with peaks that are even higher. The zones studied were mixed residential/industrial areas, each of which have prescribed levels of noise acceptability for day and night, lying between a maximum of 65 db by day in the industrial area, and a minimum of 35 db by night in the residential area; each zone having a difference of 15 db between day and night levels. The placing and effectiveness of sound barriers according to their angle of inclination (convergent, divergent or vertical), are discussed. It is pointed out that whilst their effectiveness in sound attenuation has been proven, there remains the problem of their undesirable aesthetic aspect. /TRRL/
